Sunny Jim Cave Shop 1325 Cave Street La Jolla Ca. 92037 -Welcome to Sunny Jim Cave at La Jolla Cove La Jolla Ca
Welcome to Sunny Jim Cave and Store located at 1325 Cave Street at La Jolla Cove in La Jolla. Sunny Jim Cave is a very famous and historic place in La Jolla which began in 1902 and 1903 when a tunnel was dug to gain entrance to the cave area. The La Jolla Shores area actually has 6 caves which can be entered by water due to over 200,000 years of ocean waves crashing into the rock and sandstone cliffs that line the area. Sunny Jim Cave is the only cave which can be entered by land and the Sunny Jim Cave Store sits right above the cliffs as the entrance to the cave. The caverns within the cave are rich with beautiful colorings from earthly mineral deposits, varing from the red of iron oxide, the balck, greys and yellows of vegetable matter to the pinkish purple of iodine in the kelp. Come take a voyage with us to this very popular place to visit and unique one of a kind place located right in the heart of La Jolla Village. Photo by La Jolla Village Online.com

In 1902 cave owner Gustav Shultz hired laborers to use picks and shovels to dig the tunnel to the cave area. After almost 2 years of digging they made it and gave the cave to the general public. Several years later 145 stairs were added into the lighted tunnel. The name "Sunny Jim Cave" came from Frank Baum the famous author of The Wizard of Oz. The cave opening bears a strking resemblance to W.W. Denslow's character Sunny Jim who was a mascot for the British Force Wheat cereal products of the 1920's. Photo by La Jolla Village Online.com
